Let \(S\) be a 2-dimensional surface and \(\mathbf z\) a set of \(n\) points in \(S\). Let Diff(\(S-{\mathbf z},\delta S\)) be the topological group (with the \(C^\infty\) topology) of the orientation preserving smooth diffeomorphisms of \(S-\mathbf z\) whose supports are away from the boundary \(\delta S\). Let Diff\(^\delta \)(\(S-{\mathbf z},\delta S\)) be the same group equipped with the discrete topology. The mapping class group Mod(\(S,\mathbf z\)) is the group of connected components of Diff(\(S-{\mathbf z},\delta S\)). The authors show: Theorem 1.1 Let \(D\) be the 2-dimensional disk. The map \[ H^*(\mathrm{Mod}(D,{\mathbf z});A)\to H^*(\mathrm{Diff}^\delta (D-{\mathbf z},\delta D);A) \] is split injective in all cohomological degrees and for all abelian groups \(A\).
