The notion of quantum group reflects ``quantum symmetries'' of various classical and quantum structures. A fundamental genuine example is given by \textit{S. Wang} [Commun. Math. Phys. 195, No. 1, 195--211 (1998; Zbl 1013.17008)], who defined and studied quantum permutation groups of finite sets. However, the construction of genuine quantum symmetries of classical compact connected spaces is much more complicated; for a few examples we mention the works [\textit{H. Huang}, J. Geom. Phys. 70, 232--236 (2013; Zbl 1291.46065); \textit{P. Etingof} and \textit{C. Walton}, Adv. Math. 251, 47--61 (2014; Zbl 1297.16029)]. As an important case, it is interesting to study the possibility of isometric actions by quantum groups on classical compact connected smooth Riemann manifold. The main result of the paper states that any compact quantum group acting isometrically and faithfully on such a manifold must be classical (i.e. the associated Hopf \(C^*\)-algebra is commutative), which partially answers a conjecture of the first author [Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Math. Sci. 125, No. 1, 127--138 (2015; Zbl 1312.81100)].
