Symplectic vortex equations (SVEs for short) were originally introduced independently by Salamon and Mundet to study invariants of Hamiltonian Lie group actions on symplectic manifolds. The present article considers a generalised setting to define and study SVEs on compact orbifold Riemannian surfaces. Here orbifolds are viewed as differentiable stacks [\textit{E. Lerman}, Enseign. Math. (2) 56, No. 3--4, 315--363 (2010; Zbl 1221.14003)] and the language of differentiable stacks is used to handle the technical difficulties posed by the extension. Further, the moduli space of solutions to the equations for linear actions of the circle group on the complex plane are discussed. In more detail, the article commences with an extensive review of differentiable stacks and differential forms and vector fields on differentiable stacks (see, e.g., [\textit{K. Behrend} and \textit{P. Xu}, J. Symplectic Geom. 9, No. 3, 285--341 (2011; Zbl 1227.14007)]). Having set the stage, the author discusses in Section 3 the category of representable morphisms of stacks from a so-called (type-R) stack to a quotient stack. These results enable the treatment of SVEs on compact orbifold Riemann surfaces in Section 4. Finally, the author investigates the example of a circle group action on the complex plane and compare the moduli space of solutions to the SVEs with the moduli space of Kähler vortices [\textit{T. Mrowka} et al., Commun. Anal. Geom. 5, No. 4, 685--791 (1997; Zbl 0933.57030)].
