The authors generalize a result on the existence of universal deformations for stable (pseudo-) holomorphic maps. A regular holomorphic map admits a stratified-smooth universal deformation if and only if it is stable. The main result of the paper is to generalize this fact to certain gauged (pseudo-) holomorphic maps, called symplectic vortices, as introduced by Mundet and Cieliebak, Gaio and Salamon.
