Calabi-Yau modular forms (CYMFs) appear as \(q\)-expansions originating from string theory. The authors gather evidence that CYMFs are natural generalizations of classical automorphic forms and study limits of CYMFs, in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. They derive new identities about Calabi-Yau fourfolds and consider two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds by describing the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. For elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds they obtain a mathematical proof of observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes initiated in a paper of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison.
