Given a density function \(\rho\) on \(\mathbb{R}^n\), the Riesz potential of order \(0 \leq \alpha < n\) is \[ (\mathcal{I}_\alpha \rho)(y)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{\rho(x)}{|y-x|^{n-\alpha}}\frac{1}{\omega_n}\, dx\, , \] where \(\omega_n\) is the \(n\)-dimensional volume of the unit ball in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). In the paper under review, the author considers the gradient \[ (\nabla \mathcal{I}_\alpha \rho)(y)=(n-\alpha)\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{(y-x)\rho(x)}{|y-x|^{n+2-\alpha}}\frac{1}{\omega_n}\, dx\, , \] of the Riesz potential and provides sharp and explicit pointwise estimates. Moreover, some applications, for example to potential analysis and moment theory, are described.
