      In the paper under review there are studied so called stratifications of triangulated categories. Recollements of triangulated categories may be seen as a kind of exact sequences, hence iterated recollements are analogous of stratifications in geometry or of composition series in algebra. The main result of the paper is a Jordan-Hölder type theorem for derived categories of modules over hereditary Artin algebras. A ring is called derived simple if its derived category does not admit non-trivial recollements whose factors are derived categories of rings. With this definition it is shown that the derived category of an Artin algebra has a stratification whose factors are derived categories over derived simple rings. Moreover any stratification has precisely these factors, up to ordering and derived equivalence. The paper also provides an example showing that a Jordan-Hölder theorem of the type indicated above does not hold for arbitrary rings. Another example shows that in the definition of derived simpleness the condition that factors are derived categories of rings is essential.
