\textit{W.-S. Cheung} [in J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 63, No. 1, 117-127 (2001; Zbl 1014.16035)] initiated the study of mapping problems on triangular algebras. The Lie derivations of triangular algebras were investigated by \textit{W.-S. Cheung} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 51, No. 3, 299-310 (2003; Zbl 1060.16033)]. Recently, \textit{P. Ji} and \textit{W. Qi} [Linear Algebra Appl. 435, No. 5, 1137-1146 (2011; Zbl 1226.16026)] described Lie derivations on some subsets of triangular algebras. Many results concerning mappings of triangular algebras are extended to the case of generalized matrix algebras by the reviewer and his coauthors, [see Linear Algebra Appl. 436, No. 5, 1122-1153 (2012; Zbl 1238.15015); Electron. J. Linear Algebra 22, 743-757 (2011; Zbl 1254.16034); Linear Algebra Appl. 433, No. 11-12, 2178-2197 (2010; Zbl 1206.15016)]. The main purpose of this article is to describe Lie derivations of generalized matrix algebras. More precisely, the authors prove the following result. Let \(\mathcal G\) be a generalized matrix algebra. Suppose that (i) \(Z(A)=\pi_A(Z(\mathcal G))\) and \(Z(B)=\pi_B(Z(\mathcal G))\); (ii) either \(A\) or \(B\) does not contain nonzero central ideals. If \(\delta\) is an \(\mathcal R\)-linear mapping of \(\mathcal G\) such that \(\delta([x,y])=[\delta(x),y]+[x,\delta(y)]\) for all \(x,y\in\mathcal G\) with \(xy=0\), then there exists a derivation \(d\) of \(\mathcal G\) and an \(\mathcal R\)-linear mapping \(\tau\colon\mathcal G\to Z(\mathcal G)\) vanishing at commutators \([x,y]\) with \(xy=0\) such that \(\delta(x)=d(x)+\tau(x)\) for all \(x\in\mathcal G\).
