The author introduces an interesting, abstract framework for dynamics on compact time-sets. Generalizing and unifying several existing approaches, he introduces a special adapted notion of hyperbolicity, namely the ``exponential monotonicity dichotomy'' (EMD) for linear processes. The author presents a spectral theory for linear processes in a coherent way, based only on a logarithmic difference quotient. This abstract setting allows to introduce a new topology, to prove the robustness of the EMD and to provide exact perturbation bounds. The author suggests a new, intrinsic approach for the investigation of linearizations of finite-time processes, including finite-time analogues of the local (un)stable manifold theorem and the theorem of linearized asymptotic stability. As an application, the results are discussed for ordinary differential equations on a compact time-interval.
