Let \(G\) be a Jordan domain whose boundary is smooth at all points except for one, where there is an angle of amplitude \(\alpha\pi\) (\(0<\alpha<2\)). Assume that \(0\in G\) and let \(f\) be the Riemann function that maps the interior of \(G\) conformally into the unit disk \({\mathbb D}\) with \(f(0)=0\) and \(f'(0)>0\). The paper under review deals with the problem of approximating \(f\) by polynomials. For this purpose, let \(E_n(f,G)\) be the best polynomial approximation of \(f\) in \(G\), that is, \(E_n(f,G):=\inf_{P_n\in{\mathbb P}_n}\|f-P_n\|_G\), where \({\mathbb P}_n\) denotes the set of all polynomials of degree at most \(n\) and \(\|g\|_G:=\sup_G|g(z)|\) for any function \(g:G\to{\mathbb C}\). The author proves that for each \(n\geq 1\), there is a polynomial \(P_n\in{\mathbb P}_n\) such that \[ \begin{alignedat}{2}{2} |f(z)-P_n(z)|&\leq c|z-1|^{1/(2-\alpha)}\qquad & &\text{ if } |z-1|\leq n^{-\alpha}\quad\text{and}\quad0<\alpha\leq1,\\ |f(z)-P_n(z)|&\leq c|z-1|n^{\alpha(1-\alpha)(2-\alpha)}\qquad & &\text{ if } |z-1|\leq n^{-\alpha}\quad\text{and}\quad1<\alpha<2,\\|f(z)-P_n(z)|&\leq c\frac{1}{n}|z-1|^{2(\alpha-1)/\alpha(2-\alpha)}\qquad & &\text{ if } |z-1|> n^{-\alpha},\end{alignedat} \] where \(c\) is some constant depending on \(G\). As a consequence, it is obtained that \(\displaystyle E_n(f,G)\leq {c}/{n^{\gamma_0}}\), where \(\gamma_0=\min\{1,\alpha/(2-\alpha)\}\). These results give a positive answer to a conjecture of \textit{J.~Korevaar} [in: Aspects of contemporary complex analysis, Proc. instr. Conf., Durham/Engl. 1979, 251--292 (1980; Zbl 0496.30033)].
