For a finite set \(S\) of places of \({\mathbb Q}\) not containing the infinite place, denote by \({\mathbb Q}_S\) the Cartesian product \(\prod_{\nu \in S} {\mathbb Q}_{\nu}\). The space \({\mathbb Q}_S\) is equipped with an absolute value \(| \cdot |_S\) obtained by taking the product of the \(\nu\)-adic absolute values. In the paper under review, the authors consider simultaneous approximation within this \(S\)-arithmetic setup. For a map \(\Psi : {\mathbb Z}^{n+1} \setminus \{0\} \rightarrow {\mathbb R}_+\), a vector \(\xi \in {\mathbb Q}_S^n\) is said to be \(\Psi\)-approximable if the inequality \[ | q \cdot \xi + q_0 |_S^{\# S} < \Psi((q,q_0)) \] admits infinitely many solutions \((q,q_0) \in {\mathbb Z}^n \times {\mathbb Z}\). The paper is concerned with the measure of the set of \(\Psi\)-approximable points on \(S\)-arithmetic analytic and non-degenerate manifolds. It is shown that under these conditions on a manifold, this set is null, provided that the function \(\Psi\) is norm-decreasing with \(\sum_{q \in {\mathbb Z}^{n+1}\setminus \{0\}} \Psi(q) < \infty\). A partial converse is also provided in the case when \(\# S = 1\) and \(\Psi\) is of the form \(\| q \|_{\infty}^{-n} \psi(\| q \|_{\infty})\) with \(\psi\) non-increasing. The results of the paper complement the earlier results of the authors [Geom. Funct. Anal. 19, No. 4, 1147--1170 (2009; Zbl 1272.11088)]. In that paper, an \(S\)-arithmetic Khintchine type theorem on manifolds as above was derived under the additional assumption that \(S\) should contain the infinite place.
