For any 3-manifold \(M^3\) and any nonnegative integer \(g\), the authors show that \(M^3\) has a metric which admits an infinite sequence of embedded minimal surfaces of genus \(g\), without Morse index bounds. This sequence converges to a singular minimal lamination, whose singular set consists of two points lying on a leaf which is a strictly stable 2-sphere. When the 3-manifold admits a metric of positive scalar curvature, then the previous metric can be choosen also with positive scalar curvature. The authors conjecture that, for a generic metric on \(M^3\), any sequence of embedded minimal surfaces with given genus and converging to a smooth minimal lamination has uniform Morse index bound. Genericity is required, as they provide a sequence of tori in the product metric of \(S^2\times S^1\), with unbounded Morse index and converging to the foliation by horizontal spheres.
