For a \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\), we say that \(X\) is a \(C^*\)-correspondence over \(A\) when \(X\) is a Hilbert \(A\)-module and a \(*\)-homomorphism \(\varphi_X:A\to{\mathcal L}(X)\) is given where \({\mathcal L}(X)\) is the \(C^*\)-algebra of adjointable maps on \(X\). In the paper under review, a new proof of Theorem 3.4 of \textit{M. V. Pimsner} [Am. Math. Soc. Fields Inst. Commun. 12, 189--212 (1997; Zbl 0871.46028)] is presented. This theorem states that any representation of the generating \(C^*\)-correspondence can be extended to a homomorphism on the Pimsner--Toeplitz algebra \({\mathcal T}_X\). The author also gives a similar statement for the case of product systems and thus generalizes Theorem 4.6.6 of [\textit{W. B. Arveson} (ed.), ``Noncommutative dynamics and \(E\)-semigroups'' (Springer Monographs in Mathematics) (2003; Zbl 1032.46001)].
