The author proves the Noether type inequality \(K^3_X \geq {2\over 3}(p_g(X)-5)\) for a smooth threefold \(X\) with ample canonical class. Some cases were proved in a previous paper [\textit{M. Chen}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 56, No.4 1131--1155 (2004; Zbl 1079.14045)]; here the author studies the remaining case, when \(X\) is canonically fibred by surfaces of general type with \((c_1^2, p_g) =(1,2)\). The proof is based on the study of the bicanonical map. Moreover minimal threefolds not satisfying other Noether type inequalities are classified.
