The aim of this paper is to show how to classify the homotopy type of a differential graded algebra (dga) over a principal ideal domain. The classificant is the isomorphism class of the Whitehead exact sequence associated to the dga constructed by \textit{H. J. Baues} [Algebraic homotopy (Cambridge Studies in Advanced Mathematics 15, Cambridge: University Press) (1989; Zbl 0688.55001)].
