For \(G\) a locally compact group and \(i=1,2\) the author defines topological versions \(\sum_{\text{top}}^i(G)\) of the geometric homotopical invariants \(\sum^i\) of discrete groups. She computes \(\sum_{\text{top}}^i(G)\) for \(G=\exp(\mathfrak n)\rtimes Q\), where \(\mathfrak n\) is a nilpotent Lie algebra over a \(p\)-adic field \(K\) and \(Q\) is a free finitely generated abelian group such that \(Q\) acts on \(\mathfrak n\) by topological automorphisms and \(\mathfrak n\) is a direct sum of one-dimensional \(K[Q]\)-modules. The author presents a conjecture about the Bieri--Strebel--Renz invariant \(\sum^2(H)\) for a nilpotent-by-abelian \(S\)-arithmetic group \(H\). The invariant \(\sum^2(H)\) characterizes the finitely presented subgroups of \(H\) that contain the commutator subgroup of \(H\). These results and the conjecture refine and generalize the main results of [\textit{H.~Abels}, Finite presentability of \(S\)-arithmetic groups. Compact presentability of solvable groups, Lecture Notes in Math., vol. 1261, Springer-Verlag (Berlin 1987; Zbl 0621.20015)], which characterizes the finite presentability of \(S\)-arithmetic groups and the compact presentability of the groups \(G=\exp(\mathfrak n)\rtimes Q\) considered above.
