This is an interesting paper on (local) rationality of holomorphic functions in the quaternions. One of the setbacks of quaternionic analysis is the fact that products and quotients of holomorphic functions need not be holomorphic themselves. The authors introduce rationality via the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya product, what means that the functions are multiplied on the plane \(x_0=0\) and then are continued as solutions of Cauchy's problem. Two other definitions of rationality are given, one as some sort of Gleason problem, which means that the function \(f\) may be represented as a sum \(\sum z_nf_n\), where the \(z_n\) are the Fueter variables and the \(f_n\) are also holomorphic functions. The third definition parallels the realization of rational function in the complex domain. (By the way, this is all done for matrices of holomorphic functions.) The three definitions are proved to be equivalent. The last part of the article deals with the introduction of analogues of the Arveson space and of Blaschke factors.
