Let \((M,\omega )\) be a symplectic manifold, that is, \(\omega\) is a non-degenerate closed 2-form. Suppose that \(G\) is a Lie group with Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\), acting freely and properly on \(M\) such that it is canonical, that is, it preserves the symplectic structure. A map \(K:M\to{\mathfrak g} ^*\) is said to be a standard momentum map for the \(G\)-action if \(\xi _M=X_{K^\xi}\) for any \(\xi \in{\mathfrak g}\), where \(\xi _M\) is the infinitesimal vector field associated with the \(G\)-action, \(K^\xi\) is the function on \(M\) defined by \(K^\xi (m)=\langle K(m),\xi \rangle\), and \(X_{K^\xi}\) is the Hamiltonian vector field associated with \(K^\xi\). The momentum map is said to be equivariant if \[ \text{Ad} ^*_{g^{-1}}\circ K=K\circ \phi _g, \] for \({\mathfrak g}\in G\), where Ad* is the coadjoint action and \({\mathfrak g}^*\) and \(\phi\) denotes the action on \(M\). If the momentum map is not equivariant then we know that one can modify the coadjoint action in \({\mathfrak g}^\ast\) so that the momentum map is equivariant with respect to this new \(G\)-action in \({\mathfrak g}^*\). Under the above hypotheses, the Marsden-Weinstein reduction procedure works as follows: Let \(\mu \in{\mathfrak g}^\ast\) be a regular value for \(K\). Then, the space \(P_\mu :=K^{-1}(\mu )/ G_\mu\) (\(G_\mu\) being the isotropy group of \(\mu\) under the modified action of \(G\) on \({\mathfrak g}^*\)) is endowed with a symplectic structure \(\omega _\mu\) characterized by the relation \(\pi _\mu ^\ast \omega _\mu=i_\mu ^* \omega\), where \(i_\mu :K^{-1}(\mu)\hookrightarrow M\) and \(\pi _\mu :K^{-1}(\mu)\to K^{-1}(\mu )/G_\mu\). In the paper under review, the author generalizes the Marsden-Weinstein reduction procedure to the almost symplectic setting, where the 2-form \(\omega\) is non-degenerate but not closed. For that purpose, the author first obtains conditions for which a non-equivariant momentum map can be transformed into an equivariant one by modifying the group action.
