Let \(M\) be a complex nilmanifold, that is, a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group endowed with an invariant complex structure by a discrete lattice. A holomorphic differential on \(M\) is a closed, holomorphic 1-form. In this paper, the algebraic dimension \(a(M)\) (i.e., the transcendence degree of the field of meromorphic functions) of \(M\) in terms of holomorphic differentials on \(M\) is estimated, and algebraic objects (such as meromorphic functions) on complex nilmanifolds are studied. Let \(\Psi: M\rightarrow \text{Alb}(M)\) be the Albanese map of \(M\). Then every holomorphic map from \(M\) to a Kähler manifold factors through \(\Psi\) and \[ a(M) =a(\text{Alb}(M))\leq\dim(\text{Alb}(M))\leq k(M)=\dim \mathfrak{H}^1(M)\,, \] where k(M) is the Kähler rank of \(M\) (i.e., the maximal rank of the absolutely continuous part of a positive, closed \((1,1)\)-current on \(M\) with analytic singularities) and \(\mathfrak{H}^1(M)\) is the space of holomorphic differentials on \(M\).
