The paper is concerned with the degenerate parabolic problem \[ \begin{cases} u_t(t,x)=a^{ij}(t)u_{x^ix^j}(t,x)+f(t,x),\quad (t,x)\in [0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^d,\\ u(0,x)=u_0(x),\end{cases} \] where the coefficients \(a^{ij}\) satisfy the condition \((a^{ij}(t))\geq \delta(t)I_{d\times d}\geq 0\). By using an approximation method, the authors investigate the maximal regularity of solutions, and they prove that \(u_{xx}(t,\cdot)\in L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)\) on the set \(\{t;\,\,\delta(t)>0\}\) if \(u_0\in B_p^{2-2/p}\), and \(u_{xx}(t,\cdot)\in L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)\) for all \(t>0\) if \(u_0\in B_p^{2-2/(\beta p)}\). Some upper bound estimates for this second order derivative are also presented.
