Let \(F\) be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic \(p\), and let \(\mathbb G\) be a connected reductive group defined over \(F\). A type for a supercuspidal representation \(\pi\) of \(G = \mathbb G (F)\) is a pair \((J,\lambda)\) consisting of an irreducible representation \(\lambda\) of a compact open subgroup \(J\) of \(G\) such that the only irreducible representations containing \(\lambda\) upon restriction to \(J\) are the twists of \(\pi\) by an unramified character of \(G\). In many cases, including those of \(\mathbb G = \mathbb {GL}_N\) and \(\mathbb G = \mathbb {SL}_N\), a type can be constructed explicitly for each supercuspidal representation of \(G\), which results in a unique conjugacy class of maximal simple types contained in \(\pi\). In this paper the author proves that any representation of a maximal compact subgroup of \(\mathbb {SL}_N (F)\) that is typical for an essentially tame supercuspidal representation is induced from a Bushnell-Kutzko maximal simple type. Using this result, he counts and describes the conjugacy classes of such typical representations and obtains an explicit description of an inertial Langlands correspondence for essentially tame irreducible \(N\)-dimensional projective representations of the Weil group of \(F\).
