The paper starts with a detailed introduction into the theory of Lie pseudogroups. Then it is shown that all affine and projective structures on a Riemann surface emerge from the nonlinear Janet sequence for the \(2- d\) conformal pseudogroup. Furthermore, the gauge theory for the same pseudogroup is related with the first nonlinear Spencer sequence. This implies the vanishing curvature conditions obtained in a BRS differential algebraic framework by \textit{L. Baulieu}, \textit{M. Bellon} and \textit{R. Grimm} [Phys. Lett. B 260, 63-69 (1991)].
