It is shown that nonlinear equations governing the unsteady flows of power law fluids with shear thinning behavior have two different classes of exact solutions. The first class represents the travelling wave solutions of progressive-wave type for the pressure and velocity distributions. The second class represents the exact similarity solutions which also show travelling wave characteristics provided that the rheological behavior of the power law fluid is shear thinning. The necessary conditions for the existence of the first class of solutions are obtained. In all cases the rheological effects are analyzed analytically and numerically.
