The authors investigate the nonlinear three-dimensional convection in a strong vertical magnetic field. The induced fluid motions are assumed incompressible and weak enough for the magnetic field to remain undistorted. The nonlinearities affect the convection only through modification in the horizontal temperature profile. The solutions for perturbations are characterized by a single wave number in the horizontal plane, while the dependence on the vertical coordinate is obtained by solving the nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a given Nusselt number. This approach is also valid in more general cases when the magnetic Prandtl number depends nontrivially on the depth of convection layer. Two types of convection, known in the linear regime, are also found in the nonlinear case: the steady and the overstable convection at large and small Prandtl numbers, respectively.
