Answering \textit{M. Gromov}'s question [in Geometric group theory. Vol. 2: Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups, Cambridge Univ. Press (1993; Zbl 0841.20039)], the author constructs an example of a compact nonpositively curved squared 2-complex whose universal cover contains an isometrically embedded flat plane that is not the limit of a sequence of periodic flat planes.
