In the paper under review the authors present a unified approach to vertex operator constructions for affine Lie algebras of type \(\widehat{\text{gl}}_N\) and for some extended affine Lie algebras which are coordinatized by certain quantum tori. Using the Fock space for affine Lie algebras of type \(A\), they define vertex operators which depend on non-zero complex scalars and compute the commutator of two such operators. As in [\textit{I. B. Frenkel}, Lect. Notes Math. 933, 71--110 (1982; Zbl 0505.17008)] the authors use a Clifford algebra structure to define a normal ordering for vertex operators. In this way they obtain completely reducible representations for some Lie algebras associated with a group \(G\) of non-zero complex numbers and a positive integer \(M\). By specifying their choices of \(G\) and \(M\) the authors recover both the principal and homogeneous realizations of affine Lie algebras of type \(A\) and of the extended affine Lie algebras which were studied in [\textit{S. Berman} and \textit{J. Szmigielski}, Contemp. Math. 248, 39--67 (1999; Zbl 1031.17014), \textit{Y. Gao}, Commun. Math. Phys. 211, 745--777 (2000; Zbl 0982.17012); Compos. Math. 123, 1--25 (2000; Zbl 0958.17008) and \textit{M. I. Golenishcheva-Kutuzova} and \textit{V. G. Kac}, J. Math. Phys. 39, 2290--2305 (1998; Zbl 1031.81527)].
