Analysis on the root system \(BC_ p\) \((p=1,2,\dots)\) allows three free parameters (one for each root length). This article manifests these three parameters in a commutative algebra of partial differential operators and in weight functions on the Weyl chambers of \(BC_ p\). The former is generated by \(p\) operators, of order \(2,4,\dots,2p\), and they act on Weyl-group functions. There is a family of Jacobi-type polynomials which are joint eigenfunctions of the differential operators (for \(p=2\), these were studied by \textit{T. Koornwinder} and \textit{I. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 9, 457-483 (1978; Zbl 0395.33008)]. Next the authors study the Lauricella \(F_ D\) function in \(p\) variables and establish its close relationship to their algebra of differential operators, and to a generalized hypergeometric function with matrix argument.
