The authors study the propagation of localized initial data for strictly hyperbolic systems with variable coefficients. They study the Cauchy problem for the strictly hyperbolic system (1) \((i\partial/\partial t)^ m u=A(x,t,-i\partial/\partial x,i\partial/\partial t)u\), \(x\in\mathbb{R}^ n\), \(u\in\mathbb{R}^ \ell\), with initial data depending on a small parameter \(h\to 0\). The initial data are of the form of a narrow crest concentrated in a neighborhood (of breadth \(\sim h\)) of the \((n-k)\)-dimensional plane \(y=0\), \(y\in\mathbb{R}^ k\); (2) \(u\mid_{t=0}=u_ 0(y/h,z)\), \(\partial^ j/\partial t^ j u\mid_{t=0}=0\) (\(j=1,\dots,m-1\), \(x=(y,z))\). Here \(A(x,t,\xi,\xi_ 0)\) is a polynomial of degree \(m\) in \((\xi,\xi_ 0)\), \(A\) does not depend on \((x,t)\) for \(| x|>R\). The authors construct the asymptotic \((\text{mod}h^ k)\) for solutions of the problem (1), (2) having the form of a wave concentrated for any \(t\) in a neighborhood of some surface in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) (the wave front); in the neighborhood of non-singular points of the front simple asymptotic formulae for the solution are obtained. The results are illustrated in the case of the wave equation.
