In this paper, the authors give some estimates for the volume of a complete locally symmetric Riemannian manifold of negative curvature. The main results are the following: Theorem 1. Let \(M\) be a closed complex hyperbolic surface. Then the smallest volume for such an \(M\) is \(8\pi^2\) and the smallest Euler characteristic is 3. Theorem 2. Let \(M\) be a complex hyperbolic \(n\)-manifold of finite volume with \(k\) ends. Then, \(\text{vol}(M)\leq k/n I_n\), where \(I_n\) is a universal constant which is known to be bounded by \(2(6\pi)^{(2n-1)(n-1)}\). The authors note that for Theorem 1, no analogous result is known in the case of a non-closed surface. They announce also that for Theorem 2, J. Parker has a better lower bound, appearing in his preprint ``On the volumes of cusped complex hyperbolic manifolds and orbifolds'' [to appear in Duke Math. J.; see also \url{http://fourier.dur.ac.uk:8000/~dma0jrp/img/Volume.ps.gz}].
