The authors construct an infinite subdirectly irreducible lattice \(L\) and a finite lattice \(F\) such that \({\mathcal V}(L) \succ {\mathcal V}(F)\). A modification of this construction yields a finite lattice which generates a variety with infinitely many finitely generated covers.
