A general procedure for designing two-dimensional (2-D) recursive filters, whose desired specifications consist of both magnitude and constant group delay, is given. The performance is expressed as a weighted sum of the squared distances on the complex plane between the desired and the actual digital transfer function at a discrete 2-D finite set of points (frequency plane). The minimization is performed iteratively by the Davidon-Fletcher and Powell method with the initial state given by the solution of a linear set of equations. The results are applicable to any rational transfer function. The stability of the realization is achieved by choosing a stable structure. Some examples are given. The paper represents an important contribution to the computer- aided design of the 2-D recursive digital filters.
