Given a CSL-algebra A (an operator algebra associated with a commutative subspace lattice) the author explores the question of whether A contains a compact operator. Using the approach of \textit{W. Arveson} [Ann. Math. 100, 433-532 (1974; Zbl 0334.46070)] the author characterizes the situation when A contains compact operators, compact pseudo-integral operators, or operators of Schatten p-class (p\(\neq 0)\) in terms of sets of multiplicity in the sense of harmonic analysis. Moreover, given a closed subset E of a commutative compact group G, he proves that \(Alg(P_ E)\) is synthetic if and only if E is a set of spectral synthesis. The validity of a tensor product formula for these algebras is shown to be equivalent to the (open) question of whether the product of two sets of spectral synthesis is a set of spectral synthesis.
