    Let A be a generalized Hilbert algebra, i.e., A is a *-algebra which admits an inner product (.,.) satisfying (i) \(A^ 2\) is dense in the Hilbert space H obtained by completion of A; (ii) \((ab,c)=(b,a^*c)\) for a, b and c in A; (iii) \((a,b)=(b^*,a^*)\) for a, b in A. Write \(\pi\) and J the extension of the left regular representation of A onto H and the extension of the map \(a\to a^*\), respectively, \({\hat \pi}\) the closure of a *-representation \(\pi_ 1\) of A defined by \(\pi_ 1(x)(\sum^{n}_{k=1}c_ ky_ k)= \sum^{n}_{k=1}c_ k\pi(x)y_ k\) for \(\{c_ k\}\subset \pi(A)'_ w\) and \(\{y_ k\}\subset D(\pi)\). A is called an unbounded Hilbert algebra in H if \(\pi(A)'_ w\) is a von Neumann algebra and \((A')^ 2\) is dense in H, and an extended Hilbert algebra if \(A^ 2_ 0\) is dense in H, where \(A_ 0=\{x\in A;\quad \overline{\pi(x)}\in B(H)\}.\) Among other results, the author proves that the following statements are equivalent: (1) A is an unbounded Hilbert algebra; (2) \(J\pi(A)'J=\pi(A)'';\) (3) \(\pi (A)'\) is a von Neumann algebra, \({\hat\pi}\) is standard (i.e., \({\hat \pi}(x)^*=\overline{{\hat \pi}(x^*)}\) for each x in A), and A is a *-subalgebra of an extended Hilbert algebra.
