The author considers the problem \[ -\Delta u=g(x,u)\text{ in }\Omega,\quad u=0\text{ on }\partial \Omega,\tag{1} \] where \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^d\) is an open bounded domain with smooth boundary \(\partial\Omega\) and \(g:\Omega\times\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) is a function of class \(C^1\), with \(g(x,0)=0\), so that (1) has the trivial solution \(u=0\). The author is interested in nontrivial solutions. Under some natural assumptions on \(g(x,u)\) the author proves the existence of multiple solutions for (1). To distinguish the critical points the author uses critical groups.
