Let \(f\) be a~continuous periodic function with period~\(2\pi\) and let \(s_n(x)\) denote the \(n\)th partial sum of its Fourier series. For \(\lambda>-1\) and \(0<r\leq 1\) the expression \[ A^\lambda(r;f)(x)= (1-r)^{\lambda+1}\sum_{n=0}^\infty \binom{n+\lambda}nr^ns_n(x) \] defines the generalized Abel means of~\(f(x)\). For an increasing positive function~\(\varphi\) on \((0,\infty)\) the \(\varphi\)-norm is defined by \[ \|f\|_\varphi=\sup_x|f(x)|+ \sup_{x\neq y}{|f(x)-f(y)|}/{\varphi(|x-y|)}. \] The author proves a theorem that computes an order of the approximation of~\(f\) by the Abel means \(A^\lambda(r;f)\) in the \(\varphi\)-norm for some special classes of functions~\(f\) and~\(\varphi\). This theorem extends and generalizes a~similar theorem of \textit{S. Sharma} and \textit{S. K. Varma} [Tamkang J. Math. 30, 167-173 (1999; Zbl 1011.42005)] but its proof is based on an extension of a general theorem of \textit{L. Leindler, A. Meir}, and \textit{V. Totik} [Acta Math. Hung. 45, 441-443 (1985; Zbl 0586.42002)] related to approximations by finite summability methods.
