The paper under review defines a procedure that takes an ordinary symmetric function operator and generates a \(q\)-twisted symmetric function operator that then acts on a symmetric function to produces the \(q\)-analog of that symmetric function. The well-known Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions and Macdonald symmetric functions are natural consequences of this \(q\)-analog operation. The author also uses the \(q\)-analog setting to derive a recurrence for the Macdonald \(q,t\)-Kostka coefficients, thus producing a method for calculating Macdonald symmetric functions combinatorially.
