The Ljusternik-Schnirelman category (LS-category) of a space \(S\) is the least integer \(n\) for which \(S\) can be covered by \(n+1\) open sets contractible in \(S\). Using rational homotopy theory, Félix and Halperin developed a way for computing the LS-category and (jointly with Lemaire) showed that, for Poincaré duality spaces, the rational LS-category coincides with the Toomer invariant. The authors of the paper under review give a formula for computing the Toomer invariant. In certain cases, they give bounds for this invariant.
