Dimensions of bivariate spline spaces defined on non-equally spaced knots are notoriously hard to identify. In most cases, only upper and lower bounds are known, many of them due to the authors of this paper. In this case, upper and lower bounds on superspline spaces, i.e. spaces of bivariate polynomial splines that have special smoothness properties across edges, are established. They depend especially on the precise geometry of the triangulation which is why normally no exact dimensions can be found. Aside from proving these upper and lower bounds, comparisons of the bounds are given and several applications, e.g. the definition of a new macroelement, are provided.
