A complex \(n\)-square matrix \(A\) is said to be defective if it has less than \(n\) linearly independent eigenvectors. This paper considers asymptotic expansions of the perturbed spectrum when \(A\) is changed to \(A+tE,\) where \(E \not= O\) and \(t > 0\) is a small parameter. In particular, the authors give an analysis of the rational exponents that may occur when \(E\) varies over the sphere \(\| E\| = \rho > 0.\) Moreover, they partially characterize the leading exponents. The description of the set of all leading exponents is still an open problem.
