The authors correct an error contained in two recent papers of \textit{Z. Cai}, \textit{J. Douglas} jun., and \textit{X. Ye} [Calcolo 36, No. 4, 215-232 (1999; Zbl 0947.76047)] and \textit{J. Douglas jun., J. E. Santos, D. Sheen} and \textit{X. Ye} [M2AN Math. Model. Numer. Anal. 33, No. 4, 747-770 (1999; Zbl 0941.65115)] in defining the basis for some nonconforming finite element methods when quadrilaterals occur in the partition of a two-dimensional domain.
