    A function \(\psi \in L^2(\mathbb{R})\) is called an orthonormal wavelet if the collection \[ \{ \psi_{j,k} (x) = 2^{j/2} \psi (2^j x-k) : j\in \mathbb{Z}, k \in \mathbb{Z}, \} \] forms an orthonormal basis for \(L^2(\mathbb{R})\). The dimension function associated with such a wavelet is defined as \[ D_\psi (\xi) = \sum_{j=1}^\infty \sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}} | \widehat \psi (2^j(\xi+2\pi k))| ^2. \] The dimension functions were characterized by \textit{M. Bownik, Z. Rzeszotnik}, and \textit{D. Speegle} [Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10, 71--92 (2001; Zbl 0979.42018)]. In the paper under review the author shows that if \(\psi\) is a wavelet such that the support of \(\hat \psi\) is contained in \([-(2^{n+2}/3)\pi, (2^{n+2}/3)\pi]\) then \(D_\psi \leq n\). Moreover, given \(n \in \mathbb{N}\) and \(\varepsilon >0\), an explicit construction of a wavelet with support in \([-(2^{n+2}/3)\pi, (2^{n+2}/3)\pi + \varepsilon]\) and \(D_\psi > n\), on some set of positive measure, is given. (Please note that different definitions of the Fourier transform may yield different forms of the above results).
