The author improves on a result of \textit{K. Ono} from 1999 [Compos. Math. 119, 1--11 (1999; Zbl 1002.11080)] concerning Bernoulli numbers and discriminants of quadratic fields. From the text: Let \(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {D})\) be a quadratic field with discriminant \(D\) and let \(\chi_D\) denote its nontrivial character. The author proves, for any prime \(p>3\), the existence of a \(D\) such that \((-1)^{(p-1)/2} D>0\) and the generalized Bernoulli number \(B( \frac {p-1}{2}, \chi_D)\) is a \(p\)-adic unit. The author applies the \(p\)-adic class number formula for a quadratic field related to \(\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{D})\) thus reducing the problem to a study of the class number and the \(p\)-adic regulator of that field.
