Boolean delay equations (models adapted to systems exhibiting threshold behaviour, multiple feedback paths and distinct time delays; in particular they have a continuous time variable and discrete space variable) are presented here using heuristics motivated by earthquake prediction. The models discussed may have wider applicability to systems with persistent abrupt large-scale changes. The main results are a presentation of the model, its use to simulate three basic types of seismic regime (high, intermittent, or low seismicity), and a study of `regime-switching' in the parameter space of loading and healing rates.
