In an earlier paper [J. Geom. Phys. 40, No. 2, 176--199 (2001; Zbl 1001.17025)] the authors introduced the notion of a generalized Lie bialgebroid as a pair \[ ((A,[\cdot,\cdot ],\phi_0),(A^*,[\cdot,\cdot ]^*,X_0)) \] consisting of Lie algebroid structures (brackets) \([\cdot,\cdot ]\) and \([\cdot,\cdot]^*\) on pairwise dual vector bundles \(A\) and \(A^*\) over a manifold \(M\), together with closed `1-forms' \(\phi_0\) and \(X_0\) (sections of \(A^*\) and \(A\)) with respect to these structures, respectively, that satisfy certain compatibility conditions. In the case when \(\phi_0=0\) and \(X_0=0\) this notion reduces to the concept of a Lie bialgebroid of \textit{K. Mackenzie} and \textit{P. Xu} [Duke Math. J. 73, 415--452 (1994; Zbl 0844.22005)]. Lie bialgebroids over a single point, \(M=\{ *\}\), are just Lie bialgebras, i.e. infinitesimal parts of Poisson Lie groups. Canonical, in a sense, examples of generalized Lie bialgebroids are provided by Jacobi structures on \(M\) which give rise to generalized Lie algebroid structures on \(T^*M\times{\mathbb R}\) that form, in turn, generalized bialgebroid structures in pair with the canonical generalized Lie algebroid structure on \(TM\times{\mathbb R}\). In the present paper, generalized Lie bialgebras as generalized Lie bialgebroids over a single point are studied and they are proved to be infinitesimal parts of Lie groups endowed with a certain type Jacobi structure. Accordingly defined generalized Yang-Baxter equations lead to `triangular' generalized Lie bialgebras. Several examples are offered together with a classification of compact generalized Lie bialgebras.
