This very densely written article treats a very general result on the construction of recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients \(a_k[f]\) from \[ f=\sum_k a_k[f] p_k(\cdot;q), \] where \(\{p_k(\cdot;q)\}\) is a system of \(q\)-classical orthogonal polynomials (basic hypergeometric polynomials belonging to the Hahn class) and \(f\) satisfies a linear \(q\)-difference equation of the form \[ \sum_{i=1}^{n^-} w_{-i}(x)D_{1/q}^i f(x)+ \sum_{j=1}^{n^+} w_j(x)D_q^j f(x)=g(x). \] Here \(D_q\) is the \(q\)-derivative operator \[ D_q f(x)={f(qx)-f(x)\over (q-1)x}\quad (x\not= 0),\;D_qf(0)=f'(0), \] \(w_i\) are polynomials in \(x\) and the function \(g\) has a known expansion \[ g=\sum_k a_k[g] p_k(\cdot;q). \] The main result is stated in Theorem 5.3 on page 306, after quite a number of preliminary results (of which very few are proved in detail).
