Let \(K\) be a number field and \(K_{\infty}\) be the cyclotomic \({\mathbb Z}_p\)-extension of \(K\), where \(p\) is a prime number. Given an Abelian variety \(A\) over \(K\), let \({\mathfrak X}(A/K_{\infty})\) be the compact dual of the Selmer group of \(A\) over \( K_{\infty}\). One of the important problems in Iwasawa theory is to gain a full understanding of \({\mathfrak X}(A/K_{\infty})\) considered as a module over the Iwasawa algebra \(\Lambda=\Lambda(G)\), where \(G\) is the Galois group of \(K_{\infty}/K\). In this paper the author studies the finite \(\Lambda\)-submodules of \({\mathfrak X}(A/K_{\infty})\). Under the assumption that \(p\) is odd and \(A\) has good ordinary reduction at all places lying above \(p\) and that \({\mathfrak X}(A/K_{\infty})\) is \(\Lambda\)-torsion, he proves that the maximal finite \(\Lambda\)-submodule is isomorphic to \(B\) where \(B\) is a certain finite \(\Lambda\)-submodule of \(A^t\), the dual Abelian variety of \(A\). The precise definition of \(B\) is a little technical to be reproduced here. As a Corollary, it is shown that if the action of the absolute Galois group of \(K\) on the \(p\)-torsion points of \(A^t\) is irreducible, then \({\mathfrak X}(A/L_{\infty})\) has no non-trivial finite \(\Lambda\)-submodule for any finite extension \(L/K\) such that \({\mathfrak X}(A/L_{\infty})\) is \(\Lambda\)-torsion, where \(L_{\infty}\) is the cyclotomic \({\mathbb Z}_p\)-extension of \(L\).
