\textit{C. Thomassen} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B 62, No. 2, 268--279 (1994; Zbl 0817.05024)] showed that every graph of girth at least five imbeddable in either the projective plane or the torus is 3-colorable. \textit{R. L. Woodburn} [Discrete Math. 76, No. 3, 271--276 (1989; Zbl 0685.05019)] asked if every graph of girth at least five imbeddable in the Klein bottle is 3-colorable. In the present paper, the authors give an affirmative answer to this question.
