The author considers some problems of the calculus of variations with noncoercive integrands. In particular, he studies the following functional \[ F(u)= \int^ 1_ 0 f(x, u'(x))dx \] in the class of Lipschitz continuous functions in \([0, 1]\) and he obtains a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of solution. Some examples and applications to the optimal foranging models in behavioural ecology are given.
