For a Riemann surface \(R\) and a cycle \(\gamma\) in \(R\), then exists a unique square integrable harmonic differential \(\sigma\) in \(R\) such that \(\int_\sigma \omega = (\omega,* \sigma)_R\), for all \(L^2\)-closed differential \(\omega\). The norm \(\lambda = |\sigma |^2_R\) is called the harmonic module for \((R, \gamma)\). This paper, first, derives a variation formula for harmonic modules, then applies it to prove some results for the connected 2-dimensional complex manifold \(M\), which has a holomorphic mapping onto \(B\), a region in \(C\), such that \(\pi^{-1} (t)\), \(t \in B\) is a one-dimensional irreducible nonsingular analytic set in \(M\). The main result is such an application concerning holomorphically triviality of \(M\), as follows. Let \({\mathcal M}\) be a topologically trivial triple \((M, \pi, C)\) of finite or infinite type \((g,n)\), then \({\mathcal M}\) is holomorphically trivial for \(n = 0\). If \(n \geq 1\) and \({\mathcal M}\) is locally Stein, it is also holomorphically trivial with only a few exceptions in \((g,n) = (0,1)\), (0,2) and infinite type. Even for the exceptional cases, if one adds some condition, it is still true.
