This paper takes a new approach to the integrability of affine Toda field theories. The authors have used the technique of free field realization of conformal field theories to provide a homological construction of quantum integrals of motion corresponding to particular deformations. In this way, they provee the existence of quantum integrals of motion for those deformations. They push their construction back to the classical limit; this provides a novel approach to the Toda equations and their integrability via Kac-Moody algebras. The authors are able to identify the flows of a KdV hierarchy explicitly as the infinitesimal action of the principal abelian subalgebra of the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra on a homogeneous space.
